I think everyone of the web community was shocked about the statement Angela Merkel made while President Obama’s recent visit in Berlin. In a press conference before Obama’s speech at the Brandenburg Gate Merkel was calling the internet “Neuland” which literarly means “new land” and describes something clompletely new. Here is her part of the press conference on youtube. Chancelor Merkel herself has got a pretty awesome website. It features her social media channels as well as it is accessable in an “easy language” and for the deaf. How could she say so? By the way she was not even speaking about secret services spying on private people’s email – she was just telling us that the internet could be a pretty dangerous weapon for the enemies of ours. I guess she just forgot to mention that it is also the weapon of democracy. But I started with a quote of Bob Dylan and I do believe in it – the times they are changing – so let’s see whats happening after this years elections in germany.
Yahoo just closed down his first search engine. I can still remember surfing on a friend’s first analog modem in the beginning of the 90ies. We were dreaming of the unlimited opportunities this new technology would offer us. In those times I had not even heard about google and the yahoo network was omnipresent. I built my first website with a kit that was available on my first yahoo e-mail-account . Of course it was for free – like most of the things in those times. You could order things from different countries without putting stamps in an empty envelope like we used to do before and there were nearly no websites by any german company. Things took a while over here. Now on each and every silly product you have a link to the company’s website.
But I guess I am quite fine with the importance the whole web thing has got nowadays. Most of my recent jobs were about something connected with building websites, writing articles online or managing social media channels. Some of the developments that are connected with spying out personal mails, locating people’s whereabouts or stealing information is certainly not what I dreamt about in the 90ies. But wether or not everything that is new is wrong or right – i was still pretty shure that today (more than two decades later) there should be a certain awarenes of the world wide web.
